A Hairline Crack in October Is a Bigger Crack by March

A hairline crack in your stucco that you noticed in October is not the same crack by March. Water gets into it, freezes on a cold night, expands, and leaves the crack a little wider than it started — and it happens again the next cold night, and the one after that.

The address matters before the estimate does.

This page sits in the High Desert part of our San Bernardino County service area. A town name alone does not decide the permit, inspection or construction requirements: the project address, jurisdiction and written scope do.

That is why the first useful step is a walkthrough of the property—not a generic price attached to a ZIP code.

What Freeze-Thaw Actually Does to Stucco

At 4,170 feet, Pinon Hills gets genuinely cold overnight through winter, well below what most of the towns down in the valley experience, and that matters for exactly one reason: water expands by roughly nine percent when it freezes. A hairline crack that lets in even a small amount of moisture becomes the site of a small, repeated act of demolition every time the temperature drops below freezing overnight.

Each freeze-thaw cycle widens the crack slightly, lets in slightly more water next time, and widens it again. A crack that was purely cosmetic in autumn — thin, dry, easy to dismiss — can be visibly wider and letting water further into the wall assembly by the time spring arrives, having gone through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles nobody was watching for.

The consequence is not abstract. Water that has worked its way further into a wall over a winter is doing more than cosmetic damage by the time it is addressed, and a repair done in March is fixing a bigger problem than the same crack would have needed in October. The timing of the repair matters as much as the repair itself.

Make surface preparation visible in the proposal.

These are the questions the written proposal should answer. The exact solution still depends on what is found at the property.

01

Substrate

Identify stucco, siding, wood, metal and previously coated surfaces separately.

02

Repairs and prep

State what will be washed, scraped, patched, sealed and primed before coating.

03

Edges and exclusions

Name doors, trim, eaves, walls and protected items so coverage is not assumed.

We Seal Before Winter, Not After

A lot of stucco repair treats a hairline crack as a cosmetic item to fill and forget. At this elevation that is a mistake, because the crack is not finished doing damage — it is an entry point that gets more effective every cold night until something is done about it.

Our licence, CSLB #1105333, is a California Class B General Building classification, bonded and a matter of public record at cslb.ca.gov, and it is what allows the crack repair and the coating over it to be quoted and carried out as one job rather than two separate calls to two separate people.

Pinon Hills swings harder between summer and winter than most of the towns closer to the valley floor, which is a High Desert pattern rather than a mountain one — real heat in summer, genuine overnight freezes in winter, and the stucco on every house here living through both extremes every single year.

The Crack Gets Diagnosed Before It Gets Filled

The survey identifies every crack on the property and classifies it — hairline and stable, hairline and actively widening, or larger movement cracking that follows a structural line — because those need different repairs and the wrong one fails within a season.

A rigid filler is the wrong answer for a crack that is going to keep moving through freeze-thaw cycles; it simply cracks again in the same place, often faster than the original damage occurred. A flexible, elastomeric-type repair product is specified instead for cracks that need to accommodate ongoing movement, so the repair actually survives the winters that caused the crack in the first place.

Timing is discussed as part of the plan, not left to convenience. Sealing before the first hard freeze of the season means the wall goes into winter already protected rather than spending a whole season taking on water before anyone gets to it. Where the schedule allows, we recommend booking the crack work in autumn specifically for that reason, ahead of the coating that follows.

Why did my crack get bigger over the winter?

Water got into it and froze. Water expands by roughly nine percent as it turns to ice, and a hairline crack that lets in even a small amount of moisture becomes the site of that expansion every time the overnight temperature drops below freezing. At 4,170 feet, Pinon Hills gets a genuine number of freezing nights each winter, and each one is another small widening of any crack that was letting water in.

That is why a crack that looked purely cosmetic in October can be visibly worse by March — it has been through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles in the meantime, each one doing a little more than the last, because a slightly wider crack lets in slightly more water than it did before. It is a cumulative process, not a single event.

What exactly is freeze-thaw damage?

It is the repeated expansion of water as it freezes inside a small opening — a crack, a pore, a gap — which physically forces that opening wider each time it happens. In stucco, water enters a hairline crack, and when the temperature drops overnight, that water turns to ice and expands, pushing the crack open slightly. As the ice melts the next day, more water can get in before it freezes again the following night.

Over a winter of repeated cycles, a crack that started as a cosmetic hairline can become a genuine pathway for water into the wall assembly. It is one of the more common causes of stucco damage at this elevation specifically, because it requires both moisture and a real number of freezing nights, and Pinon Hills gets both.

Why does the type of crack filler matter?

Because stucco keeps moving, and the repair has to move with it or it fails again. A rigid filler — the kind that sets hard and does not flex — works fine on a crack that will never open again, but a crack caused by ongoing freeze-thaw cycling or structural movement is going to keep moving, and a rigid patch simply cracks along the same line, often within a single winter.

A flexible, elastomeric-type product is built to stretch and compress with the wall rather than resist it, which is what actually survives repeated freeze-thaw cycles rather than failing at the first one. Using the right product for the type of crack is a small decision at the estimate stage that determines whether the repair lasts one winter or many.

Is autumn really a better time to seal cracks than spring?

Meaningfully, yes. A crack sealed in autumn goes into winter already protected, so the freeze-thaw cycles that would otherwise widen it never get the chance to start. The same crack left until spring has typically spent an entire winter taking in water and expanding on cold nights before anyone addresses it, which means the repair in spring is fixing a bigger, more advanced problem than the identical crack would have needed in October.

Spring work is not wasted — a crack found in spring should still be repaired properly rather than left for another winter — but where you have the choice, sealing ahead of the cold season is the more effective timing. We will flag this at any estimate done later in the year so you know what you are choosing.

Does it really get cold enough here for this to matter?

Yes. Pinon Hills sits at around 4,170 feet, which puts it well above most of the towns closer to the Inland Empire valley floor, and overnight lows through winter regularly drop below freezing — a genuinely different pattern from the warmer valley towns even though summer daytime highs here can be just as hot.

That combination of hard summer heat and real winter freezes is a High Desert pattern rather than a mountain one, and it is harder on building materials than either extreme alone would be, because stucco and coatings are dealing with UV breakdown in summer and freeze-thaw expansion in winter on the same wall in the same year. It is a real factor here, not a minor one.

Will you repair the cracks as well as paint over them?

Yes, and doing it in the right order matters. CSLB #1105333 is a Class B General Building licence, which covers stucco crack repair and patching in the same scope as the coating, with licensed specialty trades coordinated where a scope requires them — so the repair and the paint are one job rather than two.

We classify every crack before we quote, because a hairline crack that is still actively moving needs a flexible repair product, not a rigid filler that will simply crack again by the following winter. Painting over a crack without repairing it correctly is one of the most common ways an otherwise good repaint fails early at this elevation specifically. Free written estimate, and financing available if the repair scope is larger than expected.
