Tree removal in San Bernardino County, CA

The tree comes out so the slab or the drive can go in

A licensed Class B general contractor clearing trees, stumps and root plates ahead of the work we are building, across the West End and the High Desert. Utilities located first, your city’s tree rules checked before anything comes down, and a written scope you approve in advance.

Why this sits inside the build

Licensed and bonded

CSLB # 1105333, Class B General Building, with a $25,000 contractor bond through Travelers. It is the same license and the same bond covering the slab, the drive or the wall that goes in afterwards.

One contract, not two

Clearing and building sit in one scope under one accountable party, so there is no gap between whoever took the tree out and whoever has to build on that ground.

The ground gets put back

A root plate leaves a hole, and a hole that is not backfilled and compacted becomes a low spot in whatever gets built over it. Restoring the ground is part of the work, not an extra line later.

Change orders before the work

If the root run turns out to reach under the house, a wall or a buried line, we stop and you get the scope and the cost in writing before anything else comes out.

When a tree removal service is part of the build

You cannot pour over a root plate and hope

This page exists for a specific reason. You cannot set a footing, pour a slab, lay a paver base or run a block wall where a tree and its roots already are. The trunk is the small part of that problem. The root plate underneath is wide, it is woody, and it keeps rotting and settling for years after the tree is gone, which is exactly how a new driveway ends up with a dip in it.

The other version is a tree that is already lifting what you have. A root under a slab breaks it from below, a root under a paver field pushes a wheel line up, and a root at a footing cracks the wall above it. Taking that tree out is the first line of the repair, not a separate job. To be clear about what this is: we clear trees so we can build. We are not a tree service, and trimming, pruning and yard upkeep are not work we take on.

What this job includes

Get a written estimate

Every line below is in your written scope before anything comes down, including what leaves the property and what happens to the ground afterwards.

  • Your city's tree rules checked before we quote, and a permit pulled where one is required
  • Underground utilities located before any digging starts
  • The tree taken down in sections where there is nowhere to drop it
  • Stump and root plate removed, not just ground level with the dirt
  • The hole backfilled and compacted so the new slab or base does not settle into it
  • Timber, brush and debris hauled off the property, and the area cleaned

Start with the written scope

The next step is your job on paper

You have just read how the work runs. The next move is a walkthrough of your house, a written scope of what the job covers, and a schedule carrying the same stages. Ask for all three before you commit to anything.

Questions about Tree Removal

Straight answers before you commit

All questions
Do I need a permit to take a tree down?
Sometimes, and it depends on where you live and on the tree itself. Several cities in this county require a permit to remove a tree over a certain size, and some protect particular species or any tree standing in a front yard setback. The rules are not the same in Rancho Cucamonga as they are in Hesperia. We check your jurisdiction before we quote and pull the permit where one is needed.
Do you grind the stump or take it out?
For anything we are going to build on, we take it out. Grinding leaves the root plate in the ground, and a root plate rots and settles for years, which turns up later as a dip in a new slab or a low spot in a paver field. If nothing is going on top of it, grinding is sometimes the sensible and cheaper answer, and we will say so when that is the case.
Will you do trimming or general tree work?
No. We take trees out when they are in the way of something we are building, or when the roots are damaging something we are being asked to repair. We are not a tree service and we do not do trimming, pruning, shaping or ongoing yard upkeep. If that is what you need, we will tell you on the phone rather than take the job.
The roots are cracking my driveway. Is that the same job?
That is the most common version of this. A root under a slab or a paver field lifts it from below, and resurfacing over the top without dealing with the root is money spent on a repair that will fail again. So it runs as one job in one scope: the tree and the root run come out, the ground is backfilled and compacted, and the new surface goes down on ground that is not moving.
How do you get it down if there is nowhere to drop it?
In sections, from the top down, which is the normal answer on a suburban lot with a fence on one side and a house on the other. It takes longer than felling a tree in an open lot and it is priced accordingly. It is also the difference between a controlled removal and a repair to somebody's roof.
Why hire a licensed contractor for this rather than a crew with a chainsaw?
Because of what happens around the tree. In California any work over $1,000 legally requires a license, and ours is CSLB # 1105333, Class B, with a $25,000 contractor bond through Travelers behind it. More practically, the reason the tree is coming out is usually something that gets built on that ground afterwards, and holding both under one contract means nobody is arguing later about whose ground it was.

Schedule of work

Tree Removal · CSLB # 1105333

  1. We come and look at it

We look at the tree, at what is around it, at whether there is anywhere to drop it, and at what is going in afterwards. We also check what your city requires before anything comes down. There is no charge and nothing to decide on the day.

  2. You get the scope and the number

A written scope, a written schedule and a written number, covering the removal, the stump, the backfill and what leaves the property. Nothing starts until you sign.

  3. We clear it and put the ground back

Utilities located, permit in hand where one is needed, the tree taken down in sections if it has to be, the stump and roots out, the hole backfilled and compacted, and the debris hauled away.

If we find something

Opening a wall sometimes turns up rot, old wiring, or a leak nobody knew about. When that happens the work stops and you get a written change order with the new scope and the new number. Nothing further is built until you sign it. You will never learn about an extra cost from the invoice.

Permits are pulled in the licensed name, CSLB # 1105333, and we meet the inspector. That is our job, not yours.
