Artificial turf installation in San Bernardino County, CA

A surface that stops drinking water every summer

A licensed Class B general contractor installing artificial turf as one of the hard surfaces we build, across the West End and the High Desert. Excavation, a compacted permeable base, and a written scope you approve before anything comes out of the ground.

Why a contractor rather than a turf crew

Licensed and bonded

CSLB # 1105333, Class B General Building, with a $25,000 contractor bond through Travelers. Turf gets sold door to door out here by crews carrying no license at all, and ours takes ten seconds to check.

It is graded like hardscape

The base is excavated, compacted and graded to shed water the same way we grade a slab or a paver field. A turf surface that holds water is a turf surface with a base problem.

It goes in with the rest of the work

Turf is one surface inside a project, next to the concrete, the pavers or the deck, so the transitions between them finish level and drain together instead of fighting each other.

Change orders before the work

If the ground under the old surface is not what anyone expected, the work stops and you get the cost in writing before it goes any further.

What an artificial grass installation is really made of

You are not buying grass, you are buying the base

Most people call about turf for one reason and it is the water bill. Ground that has to be watered through a San Bernardino County, CA summer is the most expensive square footage on the property, and out in the High Desert, where Apple Valley, Victorville and Hesperia are all projected to pick up more extreme heat days, it is worse. Turf takes that line off the bill for good.

What decides whether it was worth doing is entirely underneath it. The ground gets excavated, a permeable aggregate base goes in and gets compacted, and the grade gets set so water runs off instead of sitting. Skip that and you get a soft surface that dips along the walking line inside a year and holds water in the low spots. We put turf in as one of the hard surfaces on a project, alongside the concrete, the pavers or the deck, and it gets built the same way the rest of them do.

What this job includes

Get a written estimate

Every line below is in your written scope before we excavate, because the parts that decide how it wears are the parts you never see again.

  • Existing surface stripped out and hauled off the property
  • Excavation to depth, with any sprinkler lines under the area capped off
  • Permeable aggregate base laid and compacted, graded so water has somewhere to go
  • Weed barrier laid over the compacted base
  • Turf rolled, seamed and secured at every edge, with the blades running one direction
  • Infill brushed in to weight the surface and stand the blades up, and the site cleaned

Start with the written scope

The next step is your job on paper

You have just read how the work runs. The next move is a walkthrough of your house, a written scope of what the job covers, and a schedule carrying the same stages. Ask for all three before you commit to anything.

Questions about Artificial Turf

Straight answers before you commit

All questions
Does artificial turf drain?
It does, if the base does. The turf itself is perforated and water goes straight through it, so everything depends on what is underneath. A permeable aggregate base, compacted and graded so water has somewhere to go, handles the rain we get out here without trouble. A base of fine soil, or a flat grade with no fall on it, will hold water no matter what is laid on top.
How hot does it get in the sun?
Hotter than concrete on the same afternoon, and noticeably hotter than watered ground, which is the honest answer nobody selling turf wants to give you. On a 108 degree day it is not a surface anyone is standing on barefoot. Lighter blades and a lighter infill both help, and shade from a cover or a structure helps more than either. We would rather tell you this at the estimate than after it is down.
Can turf run right up to a patio or a driveway?
Yes, and that transition is exactly where it pays to have one contractor. The turf edge and the hard edge have to finish at the same level and drain in the same direction, which is far easier when the same crew set the grade on both of them. If we are already pouring the slab or laying the pavers, the turf gets planned into the same excavation rather than fitted around it afterwards.
What do I actually have to do to it?
Rinse it when it needs rinsing, brush the high traffic lines up now and then, and top the infill up after a few years. That is genuinely the whole list. What you stop doing is the watering, which is the reason most people out here picked up the phone in the first place.
How long does it last?
Longer than the base under it, usually, which is why we keep pointing at the base. The turf itself wears at the traffic lines first, and quality between products varies a great deal in this sun. We go through the specific product's own manufacturer documentation with you before you choose, rather than quoting you a number of our own that we cannot stand behind.
Do you do the planting and the sprinklers too?
No. We install turf as a surface, the same way we install a slab or a paver field, and it is normally part of a project we are already building for you. Planting, garden design and sprinkler systems are not work we take on. If that is what you actually need, we will tell you on the phone rather than take the job and hand it to somebody else.

The full process

Schedule of work

Artificial Turf · CSLB # 1105333

  1. We come and look at the ground

We measure the area, check where water goes now, look at what is under the existing surface where we can, and find out what else on the property is getting built at the same time. There is no charge and nothing to decide on the day.

  2. You get the scope and the number

A written scope, a written schedule and a written number, with the excavation depth, the base, the turf product and the infill spelled out. Nothing is ordered until you sign.

  3. We excavate, compact and lay it

Old surface out, base in and compacted, grade set, barrier down, turf rolled, seamed and pinned, infill brushed in. The site gets cleaned and the offcuts leave on our truck.

If we find something

Opening a wall sometimes turns up rot, old wiring, or a leak nobody knew about. When that happens the work stops and you get a written change order with the new scope and the new number. Nothing further is built until you sign it. You will never learn about an extra cost from the invoice.

Permits are pulled in the licensed name, CSLB # 1105333, and we meet the inspector. That is our job, not yours.
