Five Colours Means Five Times the Cut Lines
A Redlands Victorian rarely takes one colour. Body, trim, window sash and porch detail each take their own, sometimes four or five in total, and every one of those boundaries has to be cut in by hand rather than sprayed across in a single pass.

Planning in Redlands
The address matters before the estimate does.
This page sits in the Inland Valley part of our San Bernardino County service area. A town name alone does not decide the permit, inspection or construction requirements: the project address, jurisdiction and written scope do.
That is why the first useful step is a walkthrough of the property—not a generic price attached to a ZIP code.

What a Multi-Colour Scheme Actually Costs in Labour
A single-colour stucco tract house is one spray pass with the trim cut in afterward. A Redlands Victorian or Craftsman with a body colour, a trim colour, a sash colour and a porch accent is a different job entirely, and the difference is not the paint — it is the number of boundaries between colours that a brush has to define by hand.
Every colour change on an elevation is a cut line: a straight, clean edge where one colour stops and the next begins, held by a steady hand rather than a piece of tape, because tape on ornate trim rarely sits flat against the profile. A house with two colours has some of these. A house with four or five, which is common on the Queen Anne and Classical Revival properties around Smiley Park and South Redlands, has a great many, and each one takes real time.
That is a labour question before it is a taste question. A five-colour scheme is not five times the cost of one colour, but it is meaningfully more than a two-colour scheme, and an estimate that prices a period house the way it would price a stucco box has not accounted for what the trim actually asks of the crew.

A clearer exterior painting scope
Make surface preparation visible in the proposal.
These are the questions the written proposal should answer. The exact solution still depends on what is found at the property.
Substrate
Identify stucco, siding, wood, metal and previously coated surfaces separately.
Repairs and prep
State what will be washed, scraped, patched, sealed and primed before coating.
Edges and exclusions
Name doors, trim, eaves, walls and protected items so coverage is not assumed.

We Price the Brushwork, Not Just the Square Footage
Pricing a multi-colour Victorian off a square-footage rate is how a bid ends up wrong, usually by underestimating the trim. We price the cut lines rather than assume the walls are the job, which is what a body, trim, sash and accent scheme actually requires.
Licence: CSLB #1105333, a California Class B General Building Contractor licence, on the public register at cslb.ca.gov, covering the wood and stucco repair a period house depends on before any colour goes on — with licensed specialty trades brought in where a scope genuinely calls for them.
Redlands adds a step some of these houses require and most estimates ignore: a property inside the Smiley Park Historic District, or otherwise designated, may need its exterior colour scheme reviewed before work starts. We ask early rather than after paint has been ordered, because a period-appropriate palette protects the house’s value rather than being a formality to get past.

From walkthrough to written scope
Three decisions before construction starts.
- 01
Walk the property.
Review the existing condition, access and the result you want at the actual address.
- 02
Write the scope.
Name the work, materials, exclusions, permit responsibilities and sequence in one document.
- 03
Attach the price.
The estimate belongs to that exact scope, so you can compare the job—not only the number.

Every Colour Boundary Gets Its Own Pass
The walkthrough on a period property starts by counting colours, not measuring walls. Body, trim, sash, porch detail, and any accent on brackets or corbels each get identified and photographed, because the scope has to name every colour boundary before a number can mean anything.
Where the house sits inside a historic district or otherwise carries a designation, the colour scheme is confirmed with the City before material is ordered, since paint mixed to a colour is not returnable and a scheme that has not been checked is a risk rather than a plan.
Masking on ornate trim is often not reliable — tape does not sit flat against turned wood or a raised profile — so the boundaries are cut freehand, colour by colour, in a deliberate sequence rather than all at once. That sequencing is what a two-colour tract job never has to think about.
Prep is named separately: what wood is failing at the porch, sills and fascia, where the stucco has moved, and what has to be repaired before any of the colours go on, since a beautiful cut line over rotted trim is still a repaint waiting to fail.

Read the complete FAQ →Why does a multi-colour paint job cost more than a single colour scheme?
Two things drive the cost, and neither is the paint itself. The first is masking and cutting time — every place one colour meets another has to be defined cleanly, and on ornate trim that usually means cutting the line freehand with a brush rather than relying on tape, because tape rarely sits flat against a turned profile or a raised panel.
The second is sequencing. A single-colour house can largely be sprayed in one pass. A four- or five-colour scheme has to be worked colour by colour, with drying time between each before the next can be cut against it, which stretches the calendar as much as the price. None of that means a multi-colour scheme is a bad idea — on the right period house it is usually the correct one — but pricing it like a stucco box with a different swatch is how an estimate ends up wrong.
Do I need approval for my paint colours if my house is in a historic district?
If your property is inside the Smiley Park Historic District or otherwise carries a City historic designation, likely yes — Redlands reviews exterior colour changes on designated properties as part of protecting the character those districts were established to preserve. It is a City process rather than an HOA one, and it applies to designated properties rather than to the whole city.
The practical impact is timing rather than difficulty. We confirm whether your address carries a designation as part of preparing the estimate, and if it does, that review is built into the schedule before any paint is ordered — because paint mixed to a colour is not returnable, and starting before an approval is in hand is a risk with a real price attached. Most designated properties are approved without much friction when the palette is genuinely period-appropriate.
How do you decide which colours are period-appropriate?
Historic paint research generally starts with the house itself. Victorian and Classical Revival exteriors typically used a body colour with a distinctly different trim colour and often a third accent on window sash or porch detail, favouring combinations with real contrast between the layers rather than close, similar tones. Craftsman houses lean toward a different, more muted logic, usually earth-toned bodies with a darker trim.
Where the house has physical evidence — old paint visible in a protected corner, under trim that has been replaced, or in a photograph — that is worth more than a general rule, and we will point it out if we see it during the walkthrough. Where there is no evidence, we work from what is generally documented for the house’s style and era, and we would rather show you two or three genuinely appropriate options than one guess presented as the answer.
Can you match the original colour scheme if I don't know what it was?
Sometimes, and it depends on what evidence the house still has. A small scrape in an inconspicuous, weather-protected spot — under an eave, behind a downspout, inside a porch ceiling — can reveal earlier paint layers, and working back through those layers occasionally turns up something close to an original scheme, though later repaints and fading make an exact match uncommon.
Where no physical evidence survives, an exact original colour is essentially unrecoverable, and the honest path is a scheme documented as appropriate for the house’s style and era rather than a claimed restoration. We will tell you plainly which situation your house is in rather than presenting a guess with more confidence than it deserves. Either way, the result should look like it belongs on the house rather than a modern reinterpretation of an old idea.
How many colours is too many?
There is no fixed number, but there is a point past which a scheme reads as busy rather than considered, and it is usually somewhere past five. A body, a trim, a sash colour and one accent — three or four total — covers the great majority of period Redlands houses well, with an additional colour typically reserved for something specific like porch columns or a front door.
What matters more than the count is contrast and placement: each colour should read clearly against its neighbours, and the boundaries should follow the architecture — a change in material or plane — rather than being placed arbitrarily. A five-colour scheme done with restraint looks intentional. A three-colour scheme done without attention to where the lines fall can look worse. The labour scales with the boundaries either way, so it is worth planning rather than adding colours mid-job.
Will you repair the wood trim as well as paint it?
Yes. CSLB #1105333 is a Class B General Building licence, which covers wood repair, fascia replacement and stucco patching in the same scope as the coating, with licensed specialty trades coordinated where a scope genuinely requires one.
On a period Redlands house this usually matters more than it would on newer construction — porch columns, window trim and built-up millwork have had a long time to fail at joints and end grain, and painting over failing wood is the fastest way to lose a beautiful cut line within a year or two. Being able to repair rather than only paint means the estimate reflects what the trim actually needs rather than what a fresh coat can temporarily hide. Free estimate, and financing if the repair scope is larger than expected.
